WELCOME TO GLOBAL HEALTH

At present, there are few fellowship opportunities for training family physicians in global health beyond the residency level. In contrast, there is an ever expanding need for such faculty in many countries where the discipline of Family Medicine is being developed, as a logical solution to physician shortages. Well trained family medicine faculty with additional training in global health can assist with the development of pre-doctoral, residency, clinical, and research education in these emerging health care systems. As one of the premier academic family medicine departments in the USA and a department that has a long history of involvement in global health, the Family Medicine Department at Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island/The Alpert Medical School of Brown University is particularly well situated to provide faculty development in this area. In addition, the long history of dedication by the sponsoring institutions provides fertile ground for advanced training.

FACULTY DEVELOPMENT FELLOWSHIP

OVERALL AIM OF THE PROGRAM

1. To develop a fellowship program that will prepare family physicians for future leadership roles in global health and medical education.

2. To train US faculty who can serve as interim faculty for emerging international Family Medicine Residencies until each program is able to graduate their own faculty.

3. To create a partnership with a local community health center to promote shared commitment to the underserved.

4. To work in concert with other undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate global health training programs at Brown University.

SPECIFIC EDUCATION GOALS

By the end of the fellowship programs, fellows will:

1. Demonstrate the additional clinical skills necessary for work as a family physician in resource poor settings worldwide,
2. Demonstrate skills in direct teaching, educational methodology and educational evaluation that will prepare them to be teachers in resource poor settings,
3. Demonstrate scholarly and leadership skills, through the completion of a scholarly project related to global health and through leadership in teaching global health competencies to residents and medical students.

• Committed to developing his/her teaching, clinical, scholarly and leadership skills

 SUSTAINABILITY & COLLABORATION: THUNDERMIST HEALTH CENTER 

This fellowship is created and funded through a unique, sustainable collaboration between Thundermist Community Health Center and the Department of Family Medicine at the Alpert Medical School at Brown University. The community health center, the family medicine department and the hospitals associated with each provide a rich learning environment for this Faculty Development for Global Health Fellowship. Thundermist Health Center was chosen because in addition to their care of underserved communities in Rhode Island, their staff is actively involved in global health. In 2007, Thundermist helped open a 2,500 square foot health center in the small rural town of Pinares, Honduras as part of the Shoulder to Shoulder organization. Thundermist staff participate in annual health brigades to Honduras where they assist by providing health care and health screenings.

COLLABORATION: GLOBAL HEALTH COMMUNITY AT BROWN UNIVERSITY
The robust activity in global health that is present throughout the Brown system will allow for an exchange of educational activities between the fellows and faculty from the Departments of Family Medicine, Medicine, Pediatrics, Emergency Medicine and Infectious Diseases at Brown University. We anticipate that this fellowship will contribute positively to the academic environment of the Family Medicine Residency, the education of Brown clerkship medical students, and to the existing Family Medicine Maternal and Child Health Fellowship. Towards this end the fellow attends quarterly meetings with residents and faculty from the Brown Residents International/Global Health Training Pathway (BRIGHT). Several of the BRIGHT faculty also serve as faculty mentors for the fellow as they develop skills in HIV care and in the development of the scholarly project. Joint sessions are held with Maternal Child Health Fellows and Emergency Medicine Global Health Fellows. The faculty Development and Global Health fellowship also helps to produce new faculty and teachers in the field of Family Medicine who are dedicated to the care of underserved and vulnerable communities both in the USA and globally.
