The Brown University Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship is a new twelve-month fellowship sponsored by the Brown University Department of Family Medicine. The fellowship recently received both ACGME and Brown University accreditation and the first fellow will begin July 1st, 2014. The fellowship is open to graduates of ACGME accredited residencies in Family Medicine, Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, and Emergency Medicine.

Fellows will be trained in all areas of primary care sports medicine including illness and injury related to exercise, physiology, pharmacology, radiology, sports psychology, and exercise and wellness counseling. The fellowship will implement a curriculum in musculoskeletal ultrasound, teaching diagnostic ultrasound as well as techniques in ultrasound-guided injections. Fellows will be exposed to a diverse faculty including five physicians who hold certificates of added qualification in primary care sports medicine, orthopedic surgeons who specialize in sports medicine, and the head team physicians at the University of Rhode Island, Providence College, and Johnson and Wales University.

The fellowship boasts a wide variety of experiences including game coverage and weekly sports clinics for high school students, college and university sports coverage, as well as coverage of mass participation events. Fellows will cover the University of Rhode Island football team, Providence College basketball, ice hockey, and lacrosse teams as well as the Johnson and Wales lacrosse team. The fellow will also participate in a longitudinal club sports clinic at Rhode Island College. In addition, fellows will present at both local and national conferences and have the opportunity to participate in research and writing projects.

Interested applicants can apply through the ERAS system beginning in July of 2014 for the 2015-2016 fellowship position. In addition, residents are welcome to participate in two to four week elective rotations in sports medicine through the fellowship.
