Inpatient Pediatric Rotation
Introduction
The first-year resident on this 4-week rotation is a member of a pediatric ward team at Hasbro Children’s Hospital, which houses all pediatric admissions to Rhode Island Hospital. Each team consists of a 2nd year pediatric resident and two 1st year residents. The Family Medicine resident has the same responsibilities as the 1st year pediatric resident on the team. 3rd and 4th year medical students frequently rotate on these teams as well. Call is every fourth night, and no vacation/comp time is permitted on this rotation. The resident will be scheduled one to two sessions per week in the Family Care Center on the pre-call afternoon.
Goals • Residents will provide competent care for acutely ill children in the inpatient setting.
Objectives At the end of the rotation, the resident will be able to: • Assess percent dehydration based on an infant or child’s clinical presentation. • Write IV fluid replacement orders for an infant or child with dehydration. • Assess response to treatment in a child hospitalized with an asthma exacerbation.
Evaluation Methods • Senior Resident will submit an evaluation at the conclusion of the rotation based on performance directly observed during the rotation.
