The mission of the Division of Geriatrics is to enhance the health and well-being of older adults by
  • training physicians to provide excellent clinical care for older adults in the community, acute care setting and long term care setting,
  • conducting and facilitating clinical and educational research in geriatrics focusing on pertinent issues in the care of older adults,
  • collaborating with community agencies to provide staff education, resources for practitioners and patients, and
  • providing an interdisciplinary team approach in providing quality care for frail older adults living in the community.
Our geriatric division is comprised of clinical experts in geriatrics including a board certified geriatrician, a doctorally prepared, gerontological nurse practitioner; a master’s prepared social worker, a doctor of pharmacy, a nutritionist, and a physiatrist.  To accomplish its mission, the division collaborates with other clinical departments (e.g., neurology, cardiology, rehabilitation, pulmonology, hematology, oncology, surgery, dermatology, home care, and continuing care), the Division of Geriatrics and Gerontology at the Warren Alpert School of Medicine, the Rhode Island Geriatric Education Center, and community agencies such as adult day care providers, assisted living facilities, behavioral health providers, and palliative care agencies.

GERIATRICS EDUCATION

Block Rotation

  • Four week geriatrics/rehabilitation block rotation for Family Medicine Residents in their second year of residency.

Longitudinal Curriculum

  • A longitudinal curriculum through conferences, grand rounds, in-patient lectures and the availability of consultation and preceptor services.
  • Provides the resident with the opportunity to follow patients longitudinally in the long-term care and homebound setting.
Home Visits and Geriatric Assessment
  • Provides experience in outpatient geriatric assessment and the home visit so that the resident can develop and practice assessment and management skills for dealing with older patients.

Geriatric Consultation Clinic

  • Weekly didactic sessions followed by outpatient patients for geriatric assessment.

Geriatric Fellowship Program

  • One-year clinically intensive program.
  • Opportunity to add a second year emphasizing teaching and scholarship.
  • Opportunity for a three-year program including the MPH at Brown University.
