Brown/Kenya Partnership in International Family Medicine and Primary Care

Mission: To support the training and development of family medicine clinicians, faculty and researchers for the promotion of primary care in Kenya

History: In 2005, one of the first postgraduate training programs in Family Medicine was begun in affiliation with Moi University in Eldoret, Kenya.  The program was started with the support of the Kenyan, Belgian and Dutch governments with several US-trained family medicine faculty, teaching out of four hospital sites.  The program has successfully graduated one class of residents, and each year gains in the number of new registrars being placed in the program. In 2008, Dr. Kimberly Zeller began working with the program as a visiting mentor in clinical research.  She first learned of the fledgling family medicine program through Brown’s participation in the ASANTE consortium of US medical schools that has enjoyed a successful exchange program with the Moi departments of internal medicine and pediatrics since 2006.

Brief Description of Program:
With the current director of the Family Medicine Program, Dr. Ray Downing, and the rest of the Moi FM faculty: Drs. Janice Armstrong, Vic Buckwalter, and Patrick Chege, as well as the well-established ASANTE infrastructure,  Dr. Zeller is working to develop a mutually beneficial exchange program for faculty, residents and students in promoting the developing specialty of Family Medicine in Africa.

Current Projects:
1) Ongoing support of faculty development for Kenyan-trained FM faculty in the Moi program.
2) Ongoing support of the FM residency through research mentorship (by Dr. Zeller during quarterly visits to Kenya, and through partnering of Brown FM residents with Moi FM residents to link to other Brown faculty mentors).
3) Creating a framework for FM faculty to visit the program and support both the inpatient teaching at Moi Training and Research Hospital in Eldoret; and outpatient FM teaching at Webuye Hospital.
4) Developing the support for Kenyan FM residents to participate in the exchange program between Brown and Moi.
5) Facilitating the participation of Brown FM residents in the ASANTE exchange.
6) Facilitating the participation of Brown FM researchers in ongoing research collaborations with Kenyan counterpart on projects in Kenya.

Future Projects:
1) the first clinical FM faculty member will be traveling to Eldoret in January 2010.
2) The first Brown FM resident is planning an elective at Moi in the Spring 2010.
3) Dr. Zeller continues ongoing quarterly visits to Moi in support of FM research projects by Moi residents
4) Collaboration between the Center for Primary Care and Prevention and the Webuye Demographic Surveillance System on community-based research in primary care

Opportunities for Students / Residents:
1) Students: may visit Moi for an away elective through the Brown/Kenya program: http://www.lifespan.org/cfar/int-brown-kenya.html
2) Residents: may visit the Moi FM program for an elective rotation

Opportunities for Faculty:
1) Long-term (3 months to 2 years) placement in support of the FM training program at Webuye Hospital, or
2) Shorter term support of the ASANTE program in Eldoret, teaching Kenyan residents on the adult and pediatric wards, and supervising US students and residents in the exchange program.
