Brown/FAMCO Partnership in Rwanda
Mission:
The Brown Department of Family Medicine has partnered with the Family and Community Medicine (FAMCO) Department of the National University of Rwanda to train and graduate Rwandan Family Medicine physicians in Rwanda. FAMCO's vision is to improve the total health of individuals and families in Rwanda, which will contribute to overall socio-economic development. Brown Family Medicine department faculty will also serve as faculty for Rwanda's medical and nursing schools.
Brief Description of the Program: The Rwandan government – in partnership with the Clinton Foundation and Partners in Health – has developed a comprehensive national plan to upgrade all medical and nursing professions in the country. To achieve this goal, US and Europen academic institutions will provide faculty to train Rwandan doctors until there are enough Rwandan graduates to take over teaching positions.
The plan calls for "a coordinated approach" whereby the Rwandan government contracts directly with the US government for grant management. US and European academic institutions will contract directly with Rwanda who will have responsibility, control and be accountable for the management of the funds.
Brown Family Medicine partnered with FAMCO in May of 2011 when Gowri Anandarajah, MD, Associate Residency Director for the Brown Family Medicine Residency joined other family physicians in Rwanda to draft the Family Medicine portion of the grant proposal. The new Brown Family Medicine Faculty Development for Global Health Fellowship, which will begin in the summer of 2012, has been specifically designed to prepare family medicine physicians to serve as faculty in emerging Family Medicine residencies in resource-poor countries like Rwanda.
Opportunities for Faculty: Brown, as part of a consortium of US universities, is recruiting faculty to serve as clinical educators for periods of 1 year or more in Kigali, Rwanda. These placements are part of a broader effort to expand medical capacity in the country by rapidly scaling up healthcare workforce.
