CONGRATULATIONS to the Brown FMIG for ONCE AGAIN winning a Program of Excellence award from the AAFP!!! This year, the Brown FMIG won in the category of: Excellence in Exposure to Family Medicine and Family Physicians! Moreover, ONCE AGAIN, they were asked to give a presentation about the group to the AAFP National Conference of Family Physicians which was held on July 28-31, 2011 in Kansas City. Kevin Liau, MD 14, gave the presentation about Brown’s FMIG at the Best Practices workshop. The topic was "Exposure to Family Medicine and Family Physicians." This is the second award given to the Brown FMIG in as many years! We are so proud of Brown’s FMIG!
There were eight Alpert Medical students that attended this year’s AAFP National Conference for Residents and Students in Kansas City in July. Fourth year students who attended were: Lauren Goddard, April Wilhelm, Hannah Watson, and Cindy Vuittonet. First year students who attended were: Deidre Jackson, Kevin Liau, Heather Jones, and Ryan Mason. One student who attended the conference commented, “The American Academy of Physicians National Conference is an excellent venue for active courting of residencies, but also offers amazing resources to students earlier in the process. As a rising second year medical student, I was able to collaborate ideas with other FMIG leaders, get a jumpstart on clinical skills through workshops and become better acquainted with Family Medicine and career planning in general.” A second student commented, “Attending the AAFP national conference in Kansas City allowed me to learn about FMIGs across the country.” The students who attended the conference really enjoyed the opportunity to meet residents and students from programs and schools all across the country.

fmCASES, a curricular advance
The Clerkship is taking a major step forward in our teaching of Family Medicine. Through a collaborative effort of STFM, iInTime, and numerous FM educators around the country, there now exists a network of online virtual patient cases that cover the content laid out in STFM's Family Medicine Curriculum. Starting in May of 2011, all Alpert students on the Clerkship will complete all 33 cases in place of the textbook. The content in the cases is constantly updated, carefully thought-out and makes the full use of the multimedia that are available in a digital medium. As a community faculty member, you will also have access to the cases. If you are interested, please let Jane Shaw know (
